Bhagawatham-10.11-Kuchelopakhyanam

Aham Bhaktha Paradeena:

Once in the City of Sudamapuri ( todays Porbander) there lived a poor Brahmin called Sudama who wore torn clothes and hence was nick named as Kuchelan. He had ten poor children and a beautiful wife called Kalyani. Sudama did not even go for the Yachakavruthi and remained at his Kutir and ate only what he was given at his doorsteps by the villagers who passed by his house. Incidentally he was a classmate of Krishna when He was in the Sandipani Gurukulam. Kuchelan took pride in always reminding his wife that he was the classmate of the God Krishna. Even his children seemed to be satisfied by the stories he tell about Krishna and they all lived very happily though there was nothing to eat in the house. Then one day (on Krishna's inspiration we should think) his wife started telling that Kuchelan should visit his friend who is the King of Dwaraka, initially he resisted it, but on repeated telling Kuchelan decided to visit Dwarakadeesh one day with the borrowed Avil (Rice Poha) to offer.

Started walking the long way and got tired and slept under a tree on the way. The Lord Krishna felt pity for him and straight away put him near Dwaraka while he was sleeping under the tree. When Kuchela got up he could not believe his eyes , he's near a big and beautiful city of Dwaraka. He asked where Lord Krishna's palace was to all the passersby. No one responded as they knew that all the 16008 palaces in the city belonged to Krishna and His wives. And when one gentleman showed him the Main Palace of Rukmini , he saw many kings lined up to see Krishna with lots and lots of expensive presents with them. Sudama thought his turn to meet Krishna will never come in the near future and just went to gate man and told him that he wanted to see the king Krishna. The gate man immediately went and returned and to the surprise of Sudama , asked him to go inside. The truth is that on hearing Sudama's name, Krishna could not make him wait any longer at His gate.He came running to receive Sudama before Sudama could go into the palace. Krishna gave a big hug to Sudama and lead him to the main hall of the palace.

He gave Argyam and Padyam for him and did the Pada pooja of Sudama. Then asked His Ranies to bring water for Abhishekam of Sudama . He was perplexed by seeing Krishna's adithi satkarams which surpassed anyone's guess in the Palace, including that of Rukmini and other Devies. Then Krishna gave a good feast to Sudama while having a long talk with him, recollecting the gurukulam of Sandipani with Sudama.Krishna reminded him of the Guru's ashirvadam to them and said that Guru's anugraha is the only reason why He and Sudama are living happily till this day. Then Krishna asked about his family and enquired what he had brought to him as his present. Sudama was shying to give the Poha he brought, then Krishna snatched the Avil Packet from Sudama and started eating the same, saying that it was His Preethi bojanam and that it's the Bhava with which one offers to Him is important than the material itself.............

"Patram Pushpam Phalam Thoyam,Yo Me Bhakthya Prayachathi,

Thadakam Bhakthyupahrutham Ashnami Prayathatmana:II "

Then Sudama was taken to the Main Bed -room of the Palace and was asked to take rest there. Sudama thought why did he come to meet Krishna at all . Some how on the insistence of Krishna Sudama spent some days with Krishna , admiring His awesome treatment to him and one day asked Krishna that he would like to take leave of Him. Krishna bid good bye to Sudama . On the way back home,Kuchelan thought why did Krishna not give anything to him in return for his visit, and what he should tell Kalyani about it, because Kalyani had told him that Krishna would give some thing to him. He was in a big dilemma. Then in the mind he thought how poor and Daridra that he was to think about such things and how Sreeniketana was Krishna, yet He could have given some presents to his children. On reaching home he found why Krishna did not give anything in hand. If He had to give in hand there would have been some limit, but now the whole fortune given to him was endless. When God gives, He gives without any bounds and boundaries!!!!
